BENCH x3

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN | MASTERS THESIS

Part editorial, part sculpture, Bench (x3) demonstrates how a contemporary graphic design practice can discover agency by undertaking experimental modes of working. Scattered and screwed across the surface of three purpose built benches my master's thesis is engraved at the mercy of an A.Is random inputs. Additional voices are introduced with separate bodies crafting the wooden structures and implementing the engraving. Assigning the role of composing and production to external entities the designer is removed from their traditional role, opening questions of authorship and agency. Harmonising multiple voices into a single composition, the graphic designer, once a static formalizer of content, becomes fluid adorning new titles such as editor and content. In situ Bench (x3) acts as a physical summary of my research while also contextualising additional exhibits. (It also makes a decent coffee table.)
